Short Breaks in Lisbon
English Football fans may have an antipathy
towards Portugal following the manner of their team's exit from the
last two major tournaments, but sporting rivalries aside, Portugal
still represents a great place to visit for a weekend break.
Lisbon (Lisboa) is Portugal's stunning capital that straddles the banks of the River Tagus. Visit the cosmopolitan seaside resort of Cascais and soak up the glorious sun, or take a trip into the Arrabida Hills and explore the amazing nature reserves. You won't be short of nightlife either - Lisbon is packed with plenty of bars and discos. Beautiful monuments worth seeing include the Castle of Sao Jorge, Rossio Square, Belem Tower and Padrao dos Descombrimentos (Monument of the Discoveries). If you can manage to get to Lisbon in June, you might catch the five days of street parties held in memory of Saint Anthony of Padua. Take a trip into Estoril where you will enjoy the top quality gold facilities, excellent casino and of course, the world famous Formula One racing track If you are flying to Lisbon, the main international airport is the Portela Airport.
